Topical PrEP involves vaginal rings, gels, douches or microbicides that are infused with antiretroviral drugs and are applied to the vagina or rectum in order to prevent sexual transmission of HIV. The dapivirine vaginal ring is the only form of topical PrEP that has been approved by regulators so far. It is a device that is worn inside the vagina for a month at a time, which women can insert and remove themselves.
