Description
Staffordshire Buddies is the HIV charity for Staffordshire. The mission of the charity is to reduce the impact of HIV through providing support, information, advocacy and advice to those living with, or affected by, the virus, and by undertaking health promotion support to communities at risk. Free condoms and lubricant available to clients. Complementary therapies available and access to an emergency fund. Main centre in Hanley, second site in Lichfield. Contact main office for details of both. Offer individual assessment of need. As well as referral onto specialist agencies, services available include:
Advice
Information and advice on welfare benefits, debt, employment, housing and all aspects of living with HIV.
Buddies
Trained volunteers offering individual help and support in the community.
Transport
Volunteer-based transport service to help people unable to use public transport due to health problems or financial constraints
Positive Families
Offers help and support to children and families affected by HIV. Includes an after school club and activities during school holidays. Available to children living with HIV, or affected by it. Also run a monthly group for older HIV-positive children, called 'Teenmates'
Drop-in Service
Lichfield centre has a fortnightly drop-in (twice weekly drop-in at Hanley Centre).
Support groups
As well as mixed groups, there are groups for women with HIV, for asylum seekers and refugees and for gay men.
