Training towards clinical care competencies
This version of Treating HIV and AIDS includes information about how the modules in this toolkit can be used to train HIV service providers in the clinical competencies required to provide ARV treatment and other basic care for HIV-positive people.
The World Health Organisation has developed a list of Clinical Care Competencies in consultation with training providers and clinicians. WHO recommends that when developing training programmes for health care workers, trainers should determine which competencies are necessary for the group due to be trained, and should then choose a combination of training materials that will ensure that participants receive training in all the necessary competencies.
A careful pre-assessment of who will attend the training course and what they need to learn in order to provide ARV care in their workplace or community will ensure that the training course will meet the needs of the participants.
Further details of WHO’s recommended Clinical Care Competencies for HIV/AIDS Service Delivery Providers will be available from the WHO website from July 2004. (http://www.who.int)
