“Documenting and Communicating HIV/AIDS Work” is the second in a series of practical toolkits by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. It focuses on how non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs) involved in HIV/AIDS can improve their documentation and communication work by planning it more effectively, developing specific documentation and communication skills, and learning from the shared good practice experiences of others.

The International HIV/AIDS Alliance is an international NGO that supports community action on HIV/AIDS in developing countries. “Documenting and Communicating HIV/AIDS Work” is based on the Alliance’s practical experiences of work with more than 1,300 NGOs and CBOs in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

This toolkit is designed to be used by people and organisations that support NGOs and CBOs. These include NGO support programmes, training institutions and individual facilitators.

This 115 page toolkit aims to: promote the value of good documentation and communication, build practical skills, and encourage organisations to share their experiences and lessons learned with others.

The chapters of the toolkit include: Introducing documentation and communication; Making a plan for a documentation and communication product; Making an overall documentation and communication plan; Building documentation and communication skills.

Each topic in the toolkit includes: An introduction to the topic; Instructions for a participatory activity; Facilitators’ notes with useful ideas; Useful questions to ask; Examples of completed activities; Handouts.

“Documenting and Communicating HIV/AIDS Work“ also contains information cards which describe different documentation and communication products, provide “dos and don’ts” for designing their content and structure, and helpful ideas on style.

The information cards describe how to produce a: Case study; Newsletter; Leaflet; Workshop Report; Abstract; Annual Report; Presentation; Policy Report; Photo-Story Book; Video; Website; Radio Programme.

This toolkit also includes “A Facilitators’ Guide to Participatory Workshops with NGOs/CBOs Responding to HIV/AIDS”. This guide is intended as a practical resource for those facilitating participatory workshops and meetings. It draws on the combined experience of many facilitators worldwide and offers useful ideas and suggestions.
