This module provides training towards the following WHO-recommended clinical care competencies for HIV service delivery providers:

Counselling Pre ART before decision to begin
  • Explain what ART is and dispel common myths

  • Explain why we need to use 3 ARV drugs

  • Explain the benefits of ART

  • Explain the goals of ART

  • Prepare patients for adherence to ART


Counselling pre ART regarding adherence
  • Explain to patients what resistance means using simplified, adapted explanations

  • Explain to patients the importance of adherence

  • Explain the consequences of resistance for the patient and the community

  • Explain the link between adherence and resistance

  • Explain the maximum number of pills a patient can forget per month

  • Help the patient to develop the resources needed for adherence


Prescribing ARVs
  • Differentiate a first and a second line regimen and know when they are used

  • Understand classes of ARV drugs and the basic principles for forming first- and second-line drugs


Treatment support
  • Assess adherence


Monitoring, Treatment failure and Toxicity
  • Review ARV side effects
