This module covers monitoring of patients according to the WHO clinical staging system. Participants will gain an understanding of how to distinguish between the different clinical stages of HIV disease, and which patients are eligible for treatment under World Health Organisation guidelines.

This module also covers the key activities in preparing a patient for treatment and examines the roles of different types of health care worker in preparing the patient and monitoring their adherence to treatment.

This module is relevant to health care workers at all levels of the health care system.

This module is relevant to community-based organisations where participants already have some knowledge of HIV disease.

Preparing for treatment - About this module
This module provides training towards the following WHO-recommended clinical care competencies for HIV service delivery providers:

Counselling Pre ART before decision to begin
  • Prepare patients for adherence to ART

  • Assess the patient's understanding of ART

  • Assess the patient's interest in ART

  • Check that the patient is willing and motivated for ART and agrees to ART before initiation


Counselling pre ART regarding adherence
  • Help the patient to develop the resources needed for adherence

  • Clinical assessment, preparation before initiation of ARV Therapy, and initiation


Give ART only in prepared patients
  • Determine when patients are ready for ART (ready for adherence; convene clinical team meeting to discuss) and record this (Eligible and ready)


Treatment support
  • Give practical tips to the patient on how to remember to take the drugs

  • Construct a team with other people

  • Recognize barriers to adherence

  • Provide solutions for barriers to adherence
