This module introduces CD4 cell counting, viral load testing and other tests that may be used as substitutes for these measurements when they are not available. It also covers a range of other laboratory tests that may be used in patient monitoring, usually at district or central level hospitals.

This module is relevant to doctors and clinical/medical officers at district level.

Clinical Monitoring and Laboratory Tests - About this module
This module provides training towards the following WHO-recommended clinical care competencies for HIV service delivery providers:

Basic HIV education for HIV positive clients
  • Describe disease progression, very common OI and when to seek care


Clinical assessment, preparation before initiation of ARV Therapy, and initiation
  • Carry out clinical review of patient

  • Determine clinical stage including clinical diagnosis of all stage 1,2,3 and 4 conditions

  • Determine a patient’s clinical stage using presumptive diagnosis based on clinical signs for stage 1, 2, 3 conditions, oesophageal thrush, HIV wasting syndrome, visible Kaposi sarcoma, persistent herpes simplex and information from prior clinician diagnosis of stage 4 conditions

CD4 cell counts - About this module
This module provides training towards the following WHO-recommended clinical care competencies for HIV service delivery providers:

Clinical assessment, preparation before initiation of ARV Therapy, and initiation
  • Use CD4 count and TLC where available to determine medical eligibility for ART


Treatment failure
  • If available, ask for CD4 test every 6 months

  • Call for advice in case of decreasing CD4 counts

  • Make appropriate conclusions, including treatment adjustments, when provided with CD4 and viral load


Basic HIV education for HIV positive clients
  • Explain to patients the impact of HIV on the immune system with simple, adapted explanations

  • Describe disease progression, very common OI and when to seek care
