Access to disposal facilities will vary throughout the country. Contact your local drugs project or needle exchange who will be able to provide you with information about where to collect and dispose of sharps bins.

One thing to remember is that sharps bins should not be overfilled or this could lead to spikes piercing the plastic. Bins should only be filled two–thirds full.

With larger syringes, separate the barrel and the plunger, and take the needle out. Then put the needle inside the barrel, replace the plunger, and push it until the needle bends and jams. Then bag the works and dispose of it in a bin. Don't try this with small syringes, because the needle can stick through the barrel.

Alternatively stick the used works into a used beer can or soft–drinks metal can, crush the can, and then bag the can and dispose of it in a bin.
