2009 4th South African AIDS Conference, Durban

Welcome to the 4th Southern African AIDS Conference, 31st March - 3rd April

Applying best practice, identifying knowledge gaps and integrating approaches was the key focus for this year's conference, Scaling up for Success. There was an action-packed programme of six tracks, skills-building workshops and community programmes, working on a clearer agenda for implementing effective HIV treatment and prevention programmes across Southern Africa.

NAM hosted a stand at the the conference. These conferences provide us with a great opportunity to meet and hear about your work. We are really interested in your ideas and feedback, it helps us develop email bulletins like HIV & AIDS Treatment in Practice so it continues to support you with relevant, up-to-date information and resources. You can read about some of the people who came to our stand on these pages.

NAM's international editors reported from the conference and you can read a news round-up in the April edition of the free e-bulletin, HIV & AIDS Treatment in Practice  If you are not already a subscriber, sign up today and make sure you are 'scaling up for success'.

Below you will also find pdf versions of the resources we were handing out for free at the conference so even if you didn't make it in person you can still download your own copy today.

The Basics

This brand-new series of illustrated fact sheets cover key topics for people living with HIV. Intended to support discussions between healthcare professionals and people living with HIV, the simple language and pictures bring the information to life.

Think TB in people with HIV

TB is one of the major killers in people with HIV - this publication brings together the very latest 'Three Is' research on the managment of TB in people with HIV.

Meet some of the conference delegates

Using the theme of the conference we ask some of the delegates what 'scaling up for success' means to them. Read about what they have to say, their work and what brought them to the Durban Southern African conference.

Caring for the caregivers in the face of HIV & TB

As HIV testing and ART programmes are scaled up, healthcare workers will be called on to respond to a range of clinical challenges in ways that often go beyond
simply treating HIV. In recognition of this need, HIV and AIDS Treatment in Practice (HATIP) is producing a series of regular clinical reviews focusing on the management of the spectrum of clinical conditions that affect adults and children with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.
This conference special draws together key articles focusing on the scaling up of integrated approaches and palliative care.
