Clinical evidence of treatment effectiveness
The ultimate goal of anti-HIV therapy is not to influence laboratory values such as viral load and CD4 count, but rather to improve patients’ health and prolong their lives. The adoption of HAART since 1996 has led to a dramatic decline in the number of AIDS-related deaths, at least in industrialised countries where the drugs are widely available. As a consequence, more people are living with HIV and AIDS, and living longer.
