Regimens that include only NRTIs/NtRTIs
In an effort to reduce side-effects associated with protease inhibitors and NNRTIs, some researchers have explored regimens that contain only nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs or NtRTIs). Several of these regimens have been studied, and early results showed that some seemed able to suppress HIV replication, at least in the short term. Over time, however, some patients taking NRTI/NtRTI-only combinations have developed viral breakthrough and disease progression.
For more information on NRTI/NtRTI-only regimens, see Starting HIV Treatment.
