Anaemia usually causes a feeling of weakness and giddiness, often accompanied by rapid breathing, fast pulse and low blood pressure.

Tests can detect antibodies to B19 parvovirus in the blood of infected people. There are also tests that can detect the virus itself in samples of bone marrow cells. However, B19 parvovirus-related anaemia may go undiagnosed because the condition causes no other symptoms, and an infectious cause may not be suspected.
