Polymorphisms in the cytochrome P-450 enzymes have been linked to changes in drug levels in the blood, as described in Effect of genes on HIV drug levels above. Some of these alterations have been linked to an increase in the incidence or severity of these drug’s side-effects. However, variation the gene for another liver enzyme have also been linked to elevated bilirubin levels as a side-effect of HIV treatment.
