Since many cases of transmission occur near to or during birth, AZT is recommended during labor and for the new-born child. Several regimens could be recommended:

  • (a) a single dose of nevirapine at the onset of labour and a single dose of nevirapine for the newborn at age 48 hours
  • (b)oral AZT/3TC during labour and one week of oral AZT/3TC for the newborn
  • (c)intravenous AZT for the mother during delivery and 6 weeks of AZT for the newborn
  • (a) and (c) together

After delivery, the woman's health should be assessed to determine whether antiretroviral therapy is advisable for her own health.
