Quinotaline is a new non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that has been developed by Bayer in collaboration with Hoechst. Quinotaline is also known by the codename HBY 097.

Phase I research suggested that the higher doses tested may be associated with a reduction in viral load, but may also cause a generalised rash. Development was terminated due to the short half-life of the drug, and Glaxo-Wellcome has now purchased a group of structurally similar NNRTIs from Hoechst with a view to developing these drugs as companions for its nucleosides and protease inhibitors.
