A full description of the testing procedure is essential to obtaining fully informed consent. It should emphasise:

  • That it isn't necessary to make a decision about testing on the spot.
  • How long the client will have to wait for the results. The waiting period can be acutely stressful for clients, and the best way of alleviating this stress is by offering same day testing or results within a few days. However, this shouldn't reduce the time available for counselling or consideration.
  • How the results will be given. Results should always be given face to face and never over the telephone or by post.
  • Who will know the result – what records will be kept by the testing centre? Will the client's GP be informed?
