Another development of psychodynamic therapy was to apply the theories of Freud to human relationships in families and groups. The work of the British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion (1897-1979) was seminal in this area, and he devised a method of group analysis which looked at the way groups tend to replicate, for each member, the particular family conditions they grew up in.

Group therapy may be a particularly valuable kind of therapy for people whose problems are largely to do with being in groups such as social phobics, agoraphobics, or people who suffer from anger, envy or feelings of exclusion when they find themselves in social and work situations.
