The post-Freudians
Freud died in London, and the psychoanalytic tradition in the UK was carried on after his death by figures such as his daughter Anna Freud, Ernest Jones, Melanie Klein and in particular Donald Winnicott (1896-1971). The latter two took psychoanalysis in the direction of the analysis of children, and child therapists to this day are influenced by this tradition. Strict psychoanalysis has branched out into a large section of the general therapeutic industry usually called the ‘psychodynamic’ approach which still retains Freud’s basic tenets but may offer a huge range of different techniques and settings.
One of the world’s largest and most respected organisations offering psychodynamic treatment is the Tavistock Clinic, which is located just round the corner from both Freud’s old house and the Jungian institute. It is an NHS Trust and is the largest single provider of psychotherapy to the NHS. Generally you would have to be referred by a GP though self-referral is possible. It offers psychodynamic psychotherapy to a wide range of targeted groups including Somalis, Bangladeshis, couples experiencing relationship and sexual difficulties, and people who have committed sexual offences or are worried they might.
