The PSMP addresses the most commonly reported problems of people living with HIV. Many of these (for example dealing with depression, exercise or healthy eating) relate to anybody with a long-term condition and are covered in the CDSMC in much the same way. Others are more specific to HIV (for example much of the medication content and sex, intimacy and disclosure).

Each issue is dealt with in three ways:

1. Problem solving:

The group identify their problems and identify solutions together.

2. By provision of basic information:

The PSMP concentrates on the “essentials,” key messages about which there is little possibility of argument. Thus the section on healthy eating concentrates on messages such as “5 a day,” regular meals with all food groups and “drink more fluids.”

3. By signposting other resources:

Throughout there is an emphasis on helping participants to identify sources of information and other resources for themselves. Each activity covered includes references to more detailed sources of information and there are specific activities that consider other community resources. In addition great care is taken to refer participants to health care professionals, as their most important resource, whenever appropriate.
