Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
If you work part-time, i.e. less than 16 hours a week, you may be able to claim JSA to top up your wages. To qualify for JSA you will have to sign-on as unemployed at the local Job Centre. You will also have to show that you are available for work and are actively seeking work. You will usually be expected to show that you are looking for a full time job. However, you can place restrictions on the type of job you will take, provided these restrictions are reasonable because of your health problems. The amount of JSA you receive will depend on the level of your wages. Payment of JSA can be reduced if the Employment Service is not satisfied with your efforts to find full-time work, or if they believe you are setting unreasonable restrictions. It is a good idea to get advice before claiming JSA.
