Can I get help with my rent and council tax if I start work?

It is possible to claim HB and CTB even if you work full-time, provided your wages are low enough. You will need to make a new claim as soon as you start work. The amount of benefit you get will depend on the level of your wages.

It may also be possible to get an extra 4 weeks of HB and CTB paid when you return to work, this is regardless of the level of your earnings. This scheme may apply to you; if for at least 26 weeks, you have been claiming Income Support, Income Based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, or Severe Disablement Allowance. The payment should be automatic, but you have to inform the DWP or local authority within 4 weeks of starting work or increasing your hours.
