Models of good practice
Although there are clearly many examples of HIV discrimination in employment, it is also important to stress that there are now many employers who have committed themselves by policy to provide good employment practice in relation to HIV and AIDS.
In 2004 NAT and the Positive Futures Partnership launched a new resource pack, HIV@Work to help employers deal with HIV issues in the workplace. The pack takes employers through the facts about HIV transmission and helps Human Resources Managers develop a fair policy on the issue as part of good practice on equal opportunities. There is also an additional pack aimed at workers in health and social care. Both packs are available for free download from the NAT website. http://www.nat.org.uk/
During 2005 – 2007 work is being undertaken by the Ensuring Positive Futures project to help break down the barriers to employment for PLWH in the UK. The partnership includes representatives from the HIV sector, but also trade unions, employer groups and others who will be working together trialling a number of initiatives. UKC are the leading member of this group and supporters include ACAS. Disability Right Commission, General Federation of Trade Unions and Summitt skills. For further information visit the UKC website on http://www.ukcoalition.org/ and follow links to Ensuring Positive Futures Programme.
