Work

Because of the effectiveness of HIV treatment, many people with HIV have been able to go back to, or stay at, work after their diagnosis. Most people with HIV will never experience any problems with stigma or discrimination at work because they are living with the virus.

But this can happen and can take the form of gossip, isolation, or even losing your job if your employer is told or finds out you have HIV.

It’s therefore good to know that the Disability Discrimination Act provides important protection to people with HIV in the workplace. This protection covers recruitment, terms and conditions, the way you are treated at work, and opportunities for job development and promotion.

HIV organisations have also helped people with HIV secure fair treatment at work. Useful information from NAT on HIV and employment can be found here.
