Treatment in acute infection

Some researchers think treatment around the time of initial infection may improve HIV-specific immune responses, limit the spread of HIV throughout the body, reduce the risk of progression to AIDS, and reduce transmission. However there are no data from randomised controlled trials supporting the use of antiretroviral therapy in primary HIV infection, although a number of observational studies have demonstrated limited, transient improvements in measured immunological outcomes. BHIVA guidelines do not recommend treatment at this time, except in the context of a clinical trial.
