Total parenteral nutrition

Total parenteral nutrition is a method of supplying nutritional supplements by intravenous infusion. It is only used for people with severely compromised bowel function who are unable to meet their nutritional needs from foods or supplements taken by mouth. The procedure involves infusing a liquid nutrient preparation directly into the bloodstream through a central venous line catheter.
