National Strategic Plan on HIV, STIs and TB 2012 -2016

The NSP is the strategic guide for the national response to HIV, STIs and TB for the next five years. The plan addresses the drivers of the HIV and TB epidemics and builds on the achievements of the previous NSPs to achieve its goals. Interventions that have worked well will be scaled up and the quality of service delivery will be improved, while at the same time proven new interventions will be implemented. Because it is intended to respond to the changes in the HIV and TB epidemics, the NSP will be reviewed periodically for relevance and effectiveness and, when necessary, adjustments will be made.

Clinical guidelines for the management of HIV & AIDS in adults and adolescents

This document serves as a new guidance to health practitioners with regard to the comprehensive management of HIV infected adults and adolescents. The new ART regimens are described as well as laboratory and clinical monitoring at diagnosis, at initiation of antiretroviral treatment and whilst on treatment. It prioritizes integration of HIV with TB, maternal and child health (MCH), sexual and reproductive health (SRH), scaling up of TB preventive therapy (IPT), sexually transmitted infections (STI) and access to contraceptives. Furthermore all HIV positive multi/extensive drug resistant TB (MDR/XDR-TB) patients will commence ART regardless of CD4 count.

Allowing Men to Care: Fatherhood Project in South Africa

In South Africa, men are increasingly rejecting wide-spread stereotypes of manhood by stepping forward to challenge gender roles that compromise their well-being and the health of their partners and their families. This case study documents the Sonke Gender Justice Network’s Fatherhood project, which was designed to reduce HIV transmission and address related problems, such as gender-based violence, women’s overwhelming burden of care, and the preponderance of children in need of care and support.

"Wising up" to Alcohol-Related HIV Risk, Cape Town, South Africa

In South Africa, where rates of alcohol consumption and HIV are among the highest in the world, sexual risk taking and drinking frequently intersect. In Cape Town, the Phaphama (“Wise Up”) program demonstrated dramatic behavior change in the months following a single, 60-minute counseling session offered to repeat patients at a sexually transmitted infection clinic.

The Scrutinize Campaign

Launched on South African television in June 2008, the Scrutinize Campaign was a year-long series of HIV prevention ads targeting multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. Irreverent and humorous, with strong, colorful visuals, the campaign’s ads were markedly different from previous South African HIV prevention campaigns for youth. Rather than telling the audience what to do, the Scrutinize campaign messaging encouraged those in the audience to scrutinize their own behavior, resulting in dramatic uptake of key HIV prevention messages.
