Pregnancy

FTC (emtricitabine, Emtriva) has not been tested for toxicity and safety in human pregnancy. However, animal studies have found that FTC was not associated with birth abnormalities or impairment of fertility in mice and rabbits.1 Until its safety has been shown in pregnant women, FTC should only be used where there is no available alternative.
