HIV and employment

It’s perhaps an indication of just how successful HIV treatment can be that many people with HIV are now either remaining in the workplace or thinking about returning to work or study.

Work can have many advantages, including stimulation, enjoyment, a sense of accomplishment, company and friendship - and a regular financial income.

There can, however, be some very real difficulties returning to work after having a prolonged period of time off due to illness. There’s also a chance that people may encounter some difficulties in the workplace related to their HIV infection.
