Financial help with housing

Finding somewhere to live and running a home can be a costly business. Shelter’s website has a lot of useful advice on what you might need to take into account when budgeting for paying for a home.

As with other state benefits, you will not be entitled to financial help with housing simply because you are HIV-positive. But if you are out of work, or on a low income, you may be able to claim benefits for some of your housing costs. These include Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. You may also be able to get help to pay your deposit and rent in advance. Depending on your circumstances, there may also be grants and loans that you can apply for to help you set up a new home.

You can find out more about the type of benefits available here. The Benefits Adviser tool on www.direct.gov.uk can help you work out whether you are entitled to any state benefits, or you can find out where to get more advice here.
